revolution GENERAL. The relatively stable european society of the 18th century was thrown into turmoil as the century closed. An agricultural and industrial revolution gained momentum. Art, literature, and philosophy were quickened by the stirrings of the romantic Revolt. society and politics felt the impact of the american (1776) and the french (1789) Revolutions. FRANCE. The success of the thirteen american colonies in throwing off the rule of george III intensified the revolutionary mood in Europe. when louis XVI of france (1774-92) summoned the estates general (1789), revolts spread (storming of the bastille) and the deputies of the people adopted a declaration of rights and abolished feudal privileges. after the national assembly (178991) had completed a constitution a legislative assembly was elected (1791); but france drifted into war with austria and prussia, a popular uprising overturned the throne, and a national convention (1792) proclaimed the first french Republic. The convention guillotined louis XVI and marie antoinette (1793), crushed internal revolts (reign of terror), and defeated foreign invaders. The stern rule of the committee of public safety (1793-94) eased after the fall of robespierre (1794) and a fiveman directory (1795-99) was substituted. The real power was passing to the republican army generals and bonaparte became virtual dictator (first consul) by a coup d etat (1799). first coalition against revolutionary france (austria, prussia, britain, spain, holland, 1793-97) disintegrated. second coalition (britain, austria, russia, 1798-1800) was likewise shattered by bonaparte’s victories. only britain remained invulnerable.
